Where can I buy unearthed® foods?
Why can’t I buy unearthed® foods from this website?
We don’t sell directly to individuals at present. We’d love to, really we would, but we aren’t set up to do that just now. If we start doing it in the future we will be making lots of noise about it. In the meantime, thanks for asking.
Why do you advise against re-heating some products? foods from this website?
The danger zone for food is the total time allowed for handling food – that’s four hours and includes transportation and then the time you take to heat and re-heat etc. The more time a product is reheated that adds to the time – which could take it over four hours. It is also about bacteria which can be found in food. The first time you heat your food you kill almost all the bacteria; however when it cools again, the surviving bacteria find excellent conditions to proliferate and contaminate the food even more. Therefore food should only be reheated once.
In addition food loses its quality every time it’s heated and there is the increased risk of food borne illness from improper heating and cooling procedures.
Can I freeze my unearthed® product?
Freezing advice for every product can be found on their individual product pages here. If it doesn’t say anything about freezing, that means that we don’t recommend you to freeze it.
Our products are sold as chilled products only so we only have shelf life validation on file to cover chilled temperatures. Therefore we do not have a complete understanding of how freezing may alter the quality of the product and affect shelf life.
But that doesn’t mean the [product] can’t be frozen. It’s just that if you choose to eat them after they’ve been frozen we can’t be held liable if you became unwell or the product didn’t taste as fresh as the chilled product.
Are unearthed® products free-range?
Although our meat comes from farms which comply with EU directives in terms of animal welfare and conditions etc, it isn’t free-range, no. That said, we do use free-range eggs in our Spanish Omelettes. Also our Special Reserve Iberico Chorizo comes from free-range pigs.
We do sell a small selection of free-range products through Abel & Cole http://www.abelandcole.co.uk/fridge/delicatessen.
Why do you not use seperators in your Prosciutto Crudo?
We want to keep packaging to a minimum and the sleeves will obviously increase this. Also for some people they find it an irritation as it’s another thing to throw away. In addition customers would have to pay for the product as there is a cost implication with including sheets
So we’ve taken a decision not to include them, but we are aware it’s a bit of a divisive issue.
How can the percentage (%) of ingredients for the pork/goose rillettes exceed 100%
We understand why this is confusing and can seem illogical when you first look at it.
But the percentages are actually correct, according to legislation, not a mistake. Moisture is lost from the goose/pork during the cooking process so the final figure is 100%, however what we state is the pre-cooking level. This is similar to lots of our products.
We’re looking to put a declaration on the pot which explains what happens during the cooking process.
